TEMPORARY HISTORY
AWAITING FINAL WRITE UP

The body responsible for the sport in the whole of Ireland is the Irish Indoor Bowling Association. It is unique in the British Isles in that it does not have the words Short Mat in its title. This came about because of its formation prior to the Irish long Indoor bowling Association. Therefore, the use of the Short Mat name, which the other nations have had to use, was unnecessary. Indeed, the formation of the IIBA in 1961 was no less than 23 years ahead of the next National Association being formed, which was England in 1984.

The period of growth before 1961 and the developments afterwards have helped establish Ireland as the number one Nation in Short Mat Bowls. The level and depth of skill amongst the Irish players has not been fully matched by any other Nation, except on the odd occasion. The dominance in winning trophies at International level is such that Ireland has won more trophies than all of the other Nations put together.
