SCOTTISH SHORT MAT BOWLS FEDERATION.
Scotland initially started by entering the British Isles Championships as an unofficial entry in 1990 but on the 27th March 1994 it was decided that it was time to be officially recognised by the other Nations. It was also judged to be time for a set of Scottish rules, basically in line with the other Nations who took part in the British Isles Championships and other Internationals. The aim was to improve the quality of Short Mat Bowls in Scotland and get them playing to a single set of official rules and also to help the sport grow in Scotland.
The first task was to elect the office bearers of the the new Federation. Robert Barr was elected as President; Robert Grant as Vice President; Mrs May Barr was appointed as the General Secretary; The Treasurer was Stuart Houston and the general committe comprised of Charle McGrachie, Drew McKay and G. Irvine.
The first task at hand was to draw up the official rule book, which was done after consulting the rule books of the other Nations, so that there were not too many differences. The next big step was to formally apply to join the British Isles Council and the Scottish Federation was duly accepted onto the council on the 1st May 1994. Thus the Scottish Short Mat Bowling Federation was accepted as the official body representing Short Mat Bowls in Scotland.
A period of consolidation followed this and Scotland duly took its place at all of the International events including the British Isles Championships and the World Championships. Anyone wishing to join the Federation or have more information should contact Mrs May Barr on the same phone number and email contact as the President, listed on the home page.
